HOW TO MEASURE YOUR BODY FOR CLOTHING?

When measuring yourself for clothing, the main measurements to take are the bust/chest, waist, and hip circumference, also the inseam length for pants. Other measurements, such as shoulder, underbust, thigh, outseam, sleeve length, etc., are required on specific clothes type.

Measuring Tips:

📏 Use a clothing measuring tape for maximum accuracy.

📏 Make sure the tape is level. Keep the tape snug but not too tight.

📏 Measure on bare skin, not over clothes, or wear an non-padded bra (i.e., sports bra) and tights.

📏 Measure your body before choosing a size and allow 0.394 -1.181 inches as an error range due to manual measurement.

📏 Save your measurements for future purchases.

Guide to Measuring Your Body

📏 Bust: Place one end of the tape measure at the fullest part of your bust and wrap it around going under your armpits and shoulder blades back to the front. Pro Tip: Wear a non-padded bra to get the most accurate measurements.

📏 Underbust: Pull the measuring tape around your ribcage, just underneath your breasts. Make sure the tape is running straight and level around your body.

📏 Shoulder Width: Assistant: Measure from the back, not the front. Place an end of the tape at the point where the horizontal part of the shoulder and the vertical part of the arm meet. Then run the tape across your back mimicking the natural curve of your shoulders to the other end (Shoulder to Shoulder. Self: Take your favorite dress shirt that fits nicely and measure it from shoulder seam to shoulder seam.

📏 Length/Height: Before you start to measure your length, stand straight with your feet together. Stand up straight against a door frame as a measuring point and to make sure to mark the highest area of your head. Assistant: Measure from your head to toe without any footwear on. Self: Stand straight against a wall or door frame then mark the wall with a pencil at the top of your head. Then use the tape and measure from the pencil mark to the floor.

📏 Arm/Sleeve Length: For an accurate measurement, ask someone to assist you. Measure from the back, not the front. Place one end of the tape in the middle of your neck and run it to the end of your shoulder blade. Then run down the tape from your shoulder blade to the “meaty” part of your palm called the thenar, the ball of the thumb. Measuring to the thenar will ensure you have freedom of movement when you bend your arms.

📏 Waist: Wrap the tape measure around your natural waistline, located about 2 inches (5 cm) above your belly button. To check, bend to one side – the crease that forms is your natural waistline. Tip: Don’t suck in your stomach as this will give you inaccurate results.

📏 Hips: Before you start to measure your hips, stand straight with your feet together. Then measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks, about 6 inches (15.24 cm) below your waist. Use a mirror to make sure the tape is as level as possible.

📏 Thigh: Take measurements of your thigh by locating the fullest part of your thigh and wrapping the tape measure around from front to back.

📏 Inseam: Before you start to measure your inseam, stand straight with your feet apart from each other. Place the tape near the uppermost inner part of your thigh located near your groin area to the bottom of your ankle. Pro Tip: It is easiest to measure the distance from the crotch to the hem or cuff of your favorite and best-fitting pair of pants you already own. Keep in mind that the accurate inseam measurement depends on whether you’re wearing heels or flats. The hem should hit in the middle of the heel shaft or should hit just slightly above the flat shoe. It would be best for women to take two measurements for inseams — one for trousers you’d wear with heels, and one for trousers you’d wear with flats. It’s best to measure your inseam with a pair of shoes on so that you can ensure the hem hits at the right point on your shoe.

📏 Outseam: Assistant: Before you start to measure your outseam, stand straight with your feet together. Place the tape at the top of your waistband and measure down to the end of the leg. Self: Measure the distance from the top of the waistband and measure down to the end of the hem or cuff of your favorite and best-fitting pair of pants you already own.
